These composers and songwriters come from vastly different backgrounds, emerging as much from the fields, range, and rivers as they did from the city. Their music reflects the merging of America’s indigenous population, the folk and religious traditions of various immigrant groups, and a people enslaved. Every song tells a part of America’s story.
